Deutero-Isaiah (chapters 40-55) contain all the servant songs for which Isaiah is renowned. These four poems speak of a messianic servant who is to come and save God’s people.
We view these in the light of Jesus’ life and ministry and they help us to understand aspects of this.
The first servant is described as someone who stays peaceful and calm in the face of difficulty and who is given God’s Spirit in order to bring justice.
This was particularly relevant this week following the shooting of a number of journalists in Paris by Islamic extremists.
