It’s appropriate as we approach Christmas to be thinking about Joy as this passage is calling the people of Israel to joy, and that calling is also for us today.
Isaiah 61 begins with the anointing of the Spirit and is the passage read by Jesus at the beginning of his ministry. God anoints us, not for ourselves, but for the poor, to comfort the broken hearted, to announce freedom to captives and set free those imprisoned. God anoints us with the Spirit for others.
In this anointing we are transformed and our only response can be joy and thanksgiving.
As it says in v11, ‘a garden causes seeds to grow. In the same way the Lord and king will make godliness grow.’
