October 23 – James 3:13-18

This service included the baptism of Emmeline Peet and Revd. Martin Poole did the talk which you can hear here James 3_13-18

This passage in James talks about the wisdom of God and shows how James is the bridge between a Jewish understanding of Wisdom as shown throughout the old testament, especially in Job, Proverbs and Ecclesiastes, and a new Christian understanding of wisdom as expounded by Paul in 1 Corinthians 1.

You can study these further by looking at the following links (all from The Message):
Job 28:12-28
Ecclesiastes 8:16-17

Questions for discussion:

  • Is it OK for Christians to appear foolish because of their beliefs?
  • How can we make sure that those who seem to have no voice in society are heard?
  • Is it right to say that science takes things apart to see how they work while religion brings things together to see what they mean?

We watched a video about wisdom and you can see the full version here.

  • Do you agree with what everyone says in this video about wisdom?

In the Eastern Orthodox church there is a traditional icon called The Holy Wisdom which depicts Jesus as the embodiment of wisdom in it’s female form (wisdom in the Old Testament is often described as ‘she’).  What do you think about this?
